  FORTUNE: Futuristic Phone
Nearly 40 years have passed since AT&T demonstrated its Picturephone digital video-telephone system at the New York World's Fair. Everyone thought that by the year 2002, videophones would be as common as personal hovercraft and vacations on the moon. And they were right! But now comes the Vialta Beamer Phone Video Station , which attaches to any old-fashioned analog telephone line and allows callers to see each other. (Both parties must have Beamers, of course; they cost $500 for a set of two, and extra Beamers are $300 each.) Setup is easy. When two Beamer buddies talk, they simply hit a button and see each other on a small color screen. The video ranges from decent to jerky, but for now it's the next best thing to being there.

FORBES: Smile, The Videophone's Ringing
NEW YORK - What ever happened to the videophone?

The Jetsons had them. They also showed up in science-fiction movies like Blade Runner and 2001: A Space Odyssey . And while they're certainly available on the market, chances are you'll have a hard time thinking of anyone you know who owns one.

Despite there being little technical impediment to installing a videophone line over most conventional home phone lines, there doesn't seem to be much demand for them. Maybe it simply hasn't been offered in a way that gets consumers interested. Perhaps Vialta 's Beamer will change that.

Described as a phone video station, or PVS, the Beamer adds color video capability to phone calls. It's compatible with any home phone and works over standard analog phone lines--adding no additional cost to a regular phone call.

The unit is easy enough to operate. Plug the phone line into the Beamer and then connect it to the telephone. When you're ready to start a video call, call up another Beamer user and hit the "start" button. Once the other party presses their button, the video call starts up.

The Beamer also has a snapshot feature that allows for displaying single still images instead of a live moving image. If you'd rather the other party not see what's going on, you can hide behind that still image as long as the call goes through.

Three viewing options let you see yourself, the other party or both at the same time on the display screen.

An easy target market for something like this is families with kids. New grandparents would pay to see their grandchildren over the phone. The company plans to roll the product out this month through consumer electronics retailers like Best Buy (nyse: BBY - news - people ) and Fry's . They'll sell for about $500 a pair or $300 for a single unit. But the question remains: Does anyone really want to be seen over the phone?

PC MAGAZINE (review): Stay in Touch (and in Sight)
The Vialta Beamer BM-80 turns Jetsons-style technology into reality. The attractively designed videophone has a 2.88-by-2.25-inch color display and plugs into any standard analog phone line; it's as simple to install as an answering machine. Once you connect with another Beamer user, you just press the Start button to begin the video session. Though the video tends to be a little jerky due to the low bandwidth of a dial-up phone line, the Beamer is a perfect way to reach out and touch-or at least see-your friends and family.

We got this from our son as a Christmas present and are enjoying seeing the grandchildren who are far away, Maine & California. A great product. Thank you!
- Berthe H, Bradenton, FL

For Christmas this year we bought the Beamer for ourselves and our son and daughter-in-law, who live across the country in Kentucky. We also bought the Beamer for our daughter and our son-in-law, who live about 9 hours from us in San Clemente. We rarely get to see them due to the length of travel, and we are all working and the time to get off never coincides with them. For Christmas, we actually got to see our grandchildren for the first time over the phone and what a surprise it was for all of us and especially our 5 year old granddaughter who always wants us to come and see her. She was all smiles when she saw her Grams and Grandpa over the phone. It just made our holidays a true blessing. We are very grateful to Vialta for bringing this product to us. It has made it possible for us to share in the everyday experiences of our grandchildren and our children who live far away from us. We feel so much closer to them now that we can actually see them and they can see us. This is far better than pictures, and we will get many years of enjoyment from it. Again, thank you Vialta, for making a product that can bring families together with just a phone call away.

When I saw the Beamer advertised I was really excited and wanted to purchase one, but my wife said they were too expensive since we would need to buy two - one for us (in California) and one for my married daughter (in Connecticut). Well I bought one anyway, and after I talked and saw my daughter and all her Christmas gifts she told me she was so glad I bought it! My mother and the rest of the family were all able to see my daughter on Christmas. I am so happy with the product and I have been telling everyone about it. Thanks for letting us see our daughter this Christmas.
- John R., Riverside, CA

I purchased the Beamer in order to enable my 82 year-old mother to see her grandchildren. She lives in Denver, Colorado and is unable to travel to California, where we live. Her two granddaughters are the light of her life, and for her to be able to see their school projects, birthday gifts, arts and crafts and, most importantly, their faces is a gift we never expected to have in my mother's lifetime. I feel certain that this technology has nowhere to go but up. Thanks.
- Patricia R., CA

This product is amazing. I can see my family from three thousand miles away. I am very thankful that a friend told me about Beamer. Thanks so much for such a great product!
- James C., Los Angeles, CA

I am the Credit Manager of a west coast TV station and researched the Beamer in order to approve credit for advertising on our station. After reading the reviews in various newspapers, I decided to purchase two BM80's. I kept one and sent the other one to my parents in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We were able to show each other Christmas gifts that we received; they even had their neighbors over so that I could say 'Hi!' The reception and clarity has been even better than I had expected. Thanks for allowing us the chance to connect on a more personal level.
- Nancy G, Sonoma, CA.

"I live in New York and I have been using the Beamer to see and speak to my mother in the United Kingdom for two months now and I want to tell you how wonderful it is. What an
incredible piece of technology. Please thank the genius inventors."
